FAQs

If you find a bug, broken link, or technical issue on SepticFraud, go to the Contact page or use the “Report an Issue” button (usually in the footer or help menu). Include details: what you were doing, what device/browser, what happened, and any error messages you saw.

We check reports within 24-48 hours and will follow up with you. For urgent issues affecting your account access, email support directly with screenshots if possible. The more detail you provide, the faster we can fix it.

Community guidelines are rules that keep SepticFraud safe, respectful, and useful for everyone. Key rules: be respectful and professional, stay on topic, no spam or self-promotion, no sharing personal information (phone numbers, addresses), and never give up on fellow members just because they’re frustrated.

We’re all here to help each other navigate ATU systems. If you disagree with someone, challenge their idea—not their character. Violations of guidelines result in a warning first, then account suspension. Read the full guidelines when you sign up and ask a moderator if anything is unclear.

Yes, SepticFraud is completely free to join and use. Forum access, knowledge base articles, violation examples, and community support are all at no cost. There are no paid tiers or premium features locked behind a paywall.

We’re supported by ads on the website and by the broader ATU and septic industry. Our mission is to help homeowners and contractors stay informed without barriers. No credit card required to sign up.

Verified members are certified contractors, EPA-licensed inspectors, or experienced ATU professionals who have proven their expertise and passed a verification review. Their usernames display a checkmark or badge so you know their advice comes from professional experience.

However, many helpful answers come from experienced homeowners too. Don’t dismiss non-verified members—the “Mark as Solution” system means the most helpful answers (regardless of credentials) rise to the top. If you need professional guidance for your specific situation, look for the verified badge or contact a contractor directly.

Forum categories organize discussions by topic so you can find answers faster and post in the right place. Our main categories are: General Discussion, Maintenance & Repairs, Troubleshooting, Violations & Compliance, Ask an Expert, and Photo Gallery.

Pick the category that fits best—if your question is about system maintenance, use Maintenance. If you’re confused about an inspection report, use Violations & Compliance. Posting in the right place means faster, more relevant answers. If you’re unsure, General Discussion is always a safe choice.

Yes, you can edit your own posts within 24 hours of posting. Click the “Edit” button and make your changes. After 24 hours, posts are locked to maintain the integrity of the discussion thread. Deletions are handled by moderators only.

If you need a post removed after 24 hours, or if you accidentally shared sensitive information, contact a moderator or flag the post. Moderators respond within 24 business hours.

Aerobic Treatment Units (ATU) actively treat wastewater using oxygen, bacteria, and mechanical systems. Conventional septic systems rely on passive gravity drainage and anaerobic bacteria. ATUs produce cleaner effluent, work in tight spaces or high water tables, but require regular maintenance and power. Conventional systems are simpler but may fail in challenging soil conditions.

ATUs are more expensive upfront (install + maintenance), but the payoff is superior performance and often a higher property resale value. Check your local regulations—some areas mandate ATU use for new construction.

“Mark as Solution” is a feature that lets the original question poster flag which reply actually solved their problem. When you see a checkmark next to a reply, it means that answer worked for the person who asked the question.

This helps other users quickly find the answer they need without reading through 20 replies. It also highlights expert contributors and builds their reputation in the community. If a reply helped you, mark it as a solution—it takes 2 seconds and means a lot to the person who helped.

Navigate to the Forum and click “New Topic” or “Ask a Question.” Choose the category that best fits your issue (Maintenance, Troubleshooting, Violations, etc.). Write a clear title and description with as many details as possible—what you’re seeing, what you’ve tried, and any error messages or photos.

Pro tip: Search the forum first to see if your question has already been answered. If you find similar threads, add to those instead of duplicating. Community members respond faster to specific, well-documented questions than vague ones.
